Red City is the sophomore album from City Natives, an ECMA-winning hip-hop crew composed of four Mi'kmaq and Maliseet MCs hailing from New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. The album dropped at the end of September.
Red City features tracks with strong beats, earworm hooks, regional shoutouts and sincere lyrics about getting paid for doing what you love. The single, "In the Air," explains, "I used to treat music just like a hobby/but then I did some shows and made some dough/that's when it got me."
MC Brandon "Illfundz" Arnold says the group members share the same strong work ethic. "We started City Natives with no managers or labels involved," says Arnold. "Just four artists with the same dream."
Arnold says the dream of making it in the music industry inspires the group. That sentiment is reflected in the track "On The Throne," where lyrics bust out, "my clique is runnin' the game/yeah, we gunnin' for fame."
Hard work and dreams form a powerful combination for City Natives and their fans. "If you come to any one of our shows on the tour you'll find out that we are very passionate about our music," says Arnold, "and about our live performances."
The group's east coast album-namesake tour begins this week in Halifax. "We consider Halifax to be the hip-hop capital of Canada," says Arnold. "It was only right that we started the tour off in Halifax."
