It’s been a big year for the multiple Best of Halifax Award-winning hotel. “We’ve spent almost $10 million,” says general manager Guido Kerpel. “Our guest rooms might be the funkiest in the city.” The funk comes from a small team of designers sourced locally, from Toronto and from New York. “It’s urban chic, very modern, a step up from boutique,” he says. The money also went towards upgrading all the rooms for wireless connections, maintaining the building’s exterior, and a new focus on environmental upgrades. That means no more Heavenly Hummer: the shuttle service is now by Toyota Highlander Hybrid. “We thought we’d better get on the bandwagon,” says Kerpel. “We’ve also invested heavily in converting our heating system from oil to natural gas.”
