Bronze Winner The Independent Mercantile Co.

“We started our store because Chris makes furniture,” Attica co-owner/co-founder Suzanne Saul says of her partner, Christopher Joyce. That was 20-odd years ago, and since then Attica has grown from a one-room furniture workshop and showroom (see also Best Furniture store) to a four-level retail fantasy that takes its home decor solutions a seriously as the larger furniture. (Joyce’s workshop got moved to a place of its own outside downtown.) Attica was one of the first retailers to bring Umbra accessories to Halifax, and continues to forge relationships with the best makers of well-designed housewares, including DwellStudio and New York’s Chilewich. The goal is to offer a lot of options in terms of prices and looks. “Even though we’re contemporary, we offer a range of expressions,” says Saul. “We don’t force an aesthetic on anybody.”
