Best Fish & Chips

John's Lunch

Meghan Tansey Whitton

Gold Winner John's Lunch

Silver Winner Fredie's Fantastic Fish House

Bronze Winner Evan's Seafood

The deep-fried goodness of John’s Lunch has won this award since 2011, and while co-owner Kathy Hilchey is proud to brag about what makes the fish and chips so damn good, she swears it’s the experience that makes this spot the top. “There’s a nostalgia about it. We’ll be celebrating our 50th anniversary—the floors are creaky, the counter, we’ve washed the pattern right off it. Even the money wall has been there for so many years,” she says. “People love sitting down and watching those guys work the fryer. I even love doing it and I’ve been working here for 20 years.” And though she’s quick to attribute success to the past, John’s is joining the future this year with a few updates: The restaurant’s joined Facebook, Instagram and accepts credit cards!
