Beowulf

When: July 9-Aug. 6, 6 p.m. 2011

Playwright Rick Chafe knows how to tell a story. He’s taken the Old English tale of Beowulf, complete with its epic battles and heinous monsters, and added some new relationships that give it real heart. The addition of a long-lost daughter (Jamie Konchak, who does a lovely job as the plucky and beauteous Queen-In-Waiting) for the aged Beowulf (Jeremy Webb, who manages to convey the wisdom and gravity of age and the sparkle and charisma of the younger hero) also gives the story a nice “girl-power” twist. This is a true ensemble work, with beautiful performances from the entire 11-person cast. The creatures, including an amazing horse and a fierce dragon, are wrought with imagination and humour. And as we’ve come to expect from performances at Ross Creek, the staging takes in the full beauty of the natural surroundings, making this show another memorable summer theatre experience. –Kate Watson
