Re: “The underdog Dominick Desjardins

“We haven’t had such a high turnover rate before,” says Desjardins. “It’s really exciting to see that change.” What? In 2012 four councillors were in races against other incumbents (due to the council size change). We were guaranteed a new Mayor. One district had no incumbent. Two sitting councillors (Uteck and Lund) were defeated by newbies on election day.
If your campaign is going to be based on big visionary statements, at least pick ones that aren't dead simple to refute.

Re: “Cole Harbour Place workers in second week of strike

"He is also dismayed by other picket line-crossers, such as some fitness instructors and life guards, who aren’t in the union."

In Nova Scotia it's illegal to not report to work when another bargaining unit is on strike. This is entirely separate from management's decision to hire scabs.

Re: “Happy trailers

Can anyone expand on "the Liquor Corporation's strict policies?" I know they're crazy, but do they seriously have a rule that you can only move liquor in a private motor vehicle?

Re: “Brad Johns

I'm confused as to why Johns received a C, given that he had a B- last year. Your analysis starts by pointing out that he missed some big votes while on a leave of absence for health reasons, and finishes with two compliments: voting against the St. Pat's-Alexandra sale, and that he is thoughtful. It really comes across as a low grade due to his short-term health crisis.

Re: “Transit negotiations continue; strike is set to begin Thursday morning.

I don't think it's as binary as the article states. I agree the wage deal is measly, but the article says allowing part-time workers is bad, full stop. I don't agree with that statement, I think it can be done right and better service will be the result. Does that mean I believe the proposal on the table is the best, as far as part time workers are concerned? No.

The issue with contracting out the cleaning of the busses is interesting. I'd like to see an actual benefit/cost analysis on the matter, because those things are pretty easy to figure out and I'd really be surprised if it's being contracted out at a higher price.

As far as Butts' severance package is concerned: 1.5 years' salary? What. The. Fuck. Three months' salary should be the upper limit for anyone who has worked fewer than 10 years for an organization. At that point, perhaps 6 months is appropriate.

Re: “Alternative food options on Halifax campuses

The "calling of security" had more to do with the lack of a health inspection & the presence of non-Dal students who were running the operation moreso than the Sodexho deal. Council was briefed on the situation (in public) several times, and the DSU Executive at the time made it clear that Campus Action on Food was told to ask in advance & obtain permission from the health department. If those two conditions were met there would be no problems. Unfortunately, it took a while for the message to permeate.

In any case, it's nice to see they've settled the issues and have found a way to serve food. If only they could fund it with regular business transactions rather than a levy to students who have little hope of ever tasting the food, I'd be first in line to support them.

Re: “How you brewin’?

Garrison gives you six beer, AFAIK. Might be five. Officially, Propeller is the same, but may cut corners for particularly kind customers. Don't want to anger the liquor inspector & his minimum prices.
