New Wave

Ben Lee
New Wave
Australian troubadour Ben Lee has covered Against Me’s New Wave and made it available for free. “As heavy and gnarly as it sounds at times, it is unmistakably a pop masterpiece,” Lee writes on the blog entry accompanying the download. “I wondered to myself how these songs would sound acoustically.” By taking away Tom Gabel’s grating hardcore growl and replacing it with his own melodic throat of hope, Lee makes the political anthems more digestible while also revealing their earnestness, neatly deflating Against Me’s punk stance while recalling the old dark days of his own Something to Remember Me By. Compelling, weird, inspiring.
