Belle & Sebastian

Dear Catastrophe Waitress

Published November 13, 2003.Belle & SebastianDear Catastrophe Waitress (Rough Trade)Belle & Sebastian have been so consistent over four albums, a soundtrack and endless EPs, it’s almost unsettling to hear Dear Catastrophe Waitress. There are a few tracks (“Asleep on a Sun-beam,” “Wrapped Up in My Books”) that are close to the expected, but for the most part B&S have traded in the Nick Drake songbook for a ticket to much greener, sunnier pastures. Fans may not be as eager to shed their dour expressions. But this is a refreshing, unexpected departure.—Dave Hayde
