It’s hard to understand why Beck, a genuine creative machine, needs Scientology. Although he’s not jumping over couches (yet), L Ron really isn’t helping out Beck in the music ingenuity department either. Guerolito, a remix of Guero, is just fine, perhaps more a goodie bag for hardcore fans that doesn’t push any boundaries. All of the elements are there: sweet guest appearances by Boards of Canada, AIR and Beastie Boys’ Adrock, among others; light, airy instrumentation; and new warped artwork by Marcel Dzama. Still, you wonder if Mr. Hansen’s heart is in this album. That said, there are great moments. “Ghost Range (E-Pro)” takes an exotic turn with strings and banjos. “Ghettochip Malfunction,” remixed by 8bit, is packed with sounds of the arcade and future dance floors.
