Beautiful Blood Wedding

Dalhousie Theatre takes on this fantasical and poetic Spanish tragedy.

The Dal production of Blood Wedding draws you immediately in with a gorgeous scene of people making preparations for a celebration. But in this poetic tragedy by Spanish playwright Federico Garcia Lorca, the celebration is not to be. There is bad blood between the two uniting families, and blood will be spilled in the end. The second half of the play becomes surreal, with the moon and trees commenting and aiding in bringing the tragedy to its conclusion. (The puppets that are used in this scene are truly magical---fantastic and fantastical). The cast is talented, but is at times distracting to have such young actors playing the parts that require age and wisdom. And while Lorca's poetry is lovely, as delivered in this production it becomes distancing and slows the momentum of the play, rendering it beautiful, but essentially bloodless.

To November 26, Sir James Dunn Theatre, 6101 University Avenue, 8pm (2pm on Saturday), $14/$7, 494-3820
