It’s the middle of the ’60s—somewhere Phil Spector in Hollywood is brandishing a weapon and building the Wall of Sound. In Halifax, Ranelle (Tia Andriani) and Chanelle (Erica Zirpolo) wait on their ticket to the big show: Paulette, the lead singer of their girl group The Ringettes (nice). They’re gonna tour all the way to Toronto, land a record deal, cue the stardust, assures their manager, Tiger (Christian Young). Written by Krista Lane and Cyndi Locke, most plot points of Be My Baby are telegraphed by the PG dinner theatre structure—the schmo janitor (Mallory Moors) being surprisingly talented, Ranelle’s boyfriend Logan (Brian Askew), in drag, being hit on by Benny (Ian Baird)—but there are some sharp one-liners and great performances across the board (Andriani and Zirpolo are the standouts), with all actors not just singing but playing multiple instruments on classics like "Leader of the Pack," "My Boyfriend’s Back" and the title track. The New Minas and Truro jokes will hit better with locals than tourists, so get in there and appreciate them. —Tara Thorne
