Bare: The Musical

I challenge anyone, whether LGBTQ or not, to see Left of Centre’s production of Bare without a) suffering multiple painful flashbacks to teenage years and b) shedding some tears. This is the powerful story of Peter (beautifully played by sad-eyed Ryan Henwood) and his love affair at a Catholic boarding school with the popular jock Jason (the magnetic Allie MacDonald). Jason is ambivalent about his sexuality and fearful of how revealing it will change his life, but Peter is tired of closeting his true self. This show is filled with beautifully choreographed dance numbers, great songs and powerful performances (including Helena Pipe as the sassy nun who gives Peter the validation he needs, Ann Doyle as the self-involved mother who turns away from him in his hour of need and Rebecca Guilderson as Jason’s acerbic wall-flower sister). The message of this play is that love is always the answer. See it, and listen! —Kate Watson
