Bar-star on a budget

New students: meet your new favourite spots to party on the cheap.

Split Crow
  • Split Crow

You're new in town, maybe you just turned 19, but most importantly you're looking for ways to procrastinate. Here are some options for putting off cramming and paper-writing without breaking the bank. (Or the student loan).

The Dome
1740 Argyle Street, 422-6907
While cover-free karaoke on Mondays and Tuesdays wins in my books, frosh might want to check out Student Power Wednesdays for more of a party. Free cover with student ID, drink specials and lots of opportunities to "mingle."

Reflections Cabaret
5184 Sackville Street, 422-2957
If you flash that horrible student ID picture on Friday nights at Refs, you get into DJ HedFones' Full Throttle Fridays free of charge (look out for themes like prom night, balloon party and Hollywood this month).

Lower Deck/ The Beer Market
1869 Lower Water Street, 425-1501
A deal not to be missed and well worth the wait. Just in time for mid-term season, Signal Hill Sundays start up after Thanksgiving weekend. You'll need that trusty student ID for free entry, and your dancing shoes, too.

Split Crow
1855 Granville Street, 422-4366
Okay, so you do have pay a measly cover charge for this one, but it's oh-so worth it. When you hear people speak of the legendary "power hour"---they're talking about the Split Crow. Two beers for five bucks: Wednesday and Thursday nights from 9-10 and Saturday from 4:30-5:30pm.
