To the editor,

Thanks for shedding light on Atlantica's explicit flaws. As is clear in Tim Bousquet's article ("Atlantica RIP," July 19), not only is the Atlantica trade concept a nefarious idea for workers and the environment, it doesn't even make sense from a purely economic perspective. But, of course, the biggest proponents of Atlantica are not in their position because of marked intelligence, diverse backgrounds or popular support for their decision-making capabilities—they are primarily moneyed white men representing the likes of Irving, Bank of Montreal, the Atlantic Chamber of Commerce and other capitalist institutions. It's great that Tim has clearly exposed the sheer ludicrousness of the Atlantica trade concept, but none of this should come as a surprise—Tim Bousquet echoes what hundreds of people were expressing when they marched in Halifax streets last month. Unfortunately, this message was eclipsed by the mainstream media's sensationalized coverage of the protest, which zeroed in on a clash between protesters and the police, and failed to provide crucial information to the public. Atlantica will bring a lot more damage than a few broken windows.
