Atlas Sound

Parallax (4AD)

atlas-music-review.jpg

Parallax is the third album by Deerhunter Bradford Cox’s solo outfit Atlas Sound, and if you’ve heard his previous releases, you know what to expect. The guitars are more toned down than in his work with Deerhunter and there are more synthesizers, but Parallax separates itself from his other releases due to the eclectic songwriting. The ambient textures are more reserved with a stronger emphasis on instrumentation (wood blocks, anyone?), incorporating acoustic strumming with tropical percussion to make the album musically dense while maintaining a light sound. For an album mostly recorded in hotel bedrooms and makeshift studios, this record is pretty tight.
