Art

Art, as in paintings and the ideas that swirl around them, may not be your thing, but don’t let that stop you from going to see Dartmouth Players’ terrific production of Yasmina Reza’s Tony Award-winning Art: It’s actually a story about relationships, and everyone will be able to relate on some level. The play begins with Serge (Phil Reid) having just purchased a large white-on-white painting for an obscene amount of money. His close but domineering friend Marc (Frank MacLean) viciously condemns the purchase, while the conciliatory Yvan (Terry Coolen) goes to great lengths to reconcile the two. Tensions escalate, and in the process we learn a lot about the underpinnings of the trio’s friendship. All three actors have a gift for comedy (yes, this play is truly funny), and they have a remarkable onstage chemistry. A masterpiece of thought-provoking theatre!---Kate Watson
