Antony and the Johnsons

The Crying Light (Secretly Canadian)

In late 2008, Antony fans were treated to the Another World EP, the devastating title song (suicide note?) which also appears on The Crying Light, their third full-length release. If you're not moved, see a doctor. Antony Hegarty's androgynous, alien voice soars above the piano and strings like an instrument, especially on torch songs like "Her Eyes Are Underneath The Ground," with poetic tales of nature and human isolation, like a modern Wordsworth. Though this album's missing an ass-shaker like Another World's bluesy "Shake That Bird," "Epilepsy is Dancing" cries glitter and grace in a slow, hopeful waltz. Sue Carter Flinn
