Antigonish Highland Games

Though the idea of competing in any of form of sport whilst wearing a skirt is baffling, the brawny competitors at the Antigonish Highland Games pull it off classily. This summer's an extra special one for pipers, drummers, dancers and athletes—it's the 150th year of these Scottish heritage celebrations in the 'Nish. Cheer on road races, a series serious tug of wars and various Scottish Heavy Events—AKA intense lifting, carrying, throwing and one event that is, "Known for literally ripping the skin off the athlete's hand" and "can dislocate a competitor's shoulder through a combination of centrifugal force and weight of implement." Uh, talk about the love of the game. —Allison Saunders
