Re: “LMAO: Halifax’s comedy scene is small but powerful

Nice to see a run down on the local scene from somebody in the middle of it. Kudos Chanel and Kudos to The Coast!

Re: “Best Comedian

With all due respect, who is Megan McDowell?

I'm sure she is a lovely, and funny lady, but for the better part of the last year I have attended 2 to 3 comedy nights a week at several venues. (Freeman's, Gus' Pub, Bearley's, Yuk Yuks, Monte's, Brewsters and Parkside Pub just to name a few) I think the only room I haven't been able to make it to has been the Grad House.

For 9 months I hosted and produced a weekly show at Clay West that even had a combined showcase for the Halifax Comedy Fest, Just For Laughs comedy Fest and Hubcap comedy fest where I was asked to suggest local talent for the producers to see. I haven't seen her perform or even met her in that time. If she is the second best comedian in the city I MUST have her information because I produce a lot of shows around the Maritimes and I'm always ACTIVELY looking for new talent. Until then I guess I will have to continue to book local comedians who have performed at the Halifax Comedy Fest, toured nationally, done some TV spots for Much Music and MTV and recorded for XM radio or did warm up for Steve Patterson's TV show on film makers, like Ian Black, Mike MacQueen, Andrew Vaughan and Kaitlin Shuvera, or maybe the up and coming locals I see 3 times a week performing that will likely get a shot at a festival this year like Dan Hendricken, Chanel Frierre or Carey Lee who was runner up at last year's Hubcap comedy Fest Amateur competition, beating out dozens of other comics from the east coast.

I'm sorry if this sounds a little bitter. Please forgive me. I'm literally on the train in the middle of New Brunswick on my way back to Halifax from headlining and emceeing 40 shows in 42 days in Toronto, Kingston, and Ottawa. I'm probably just tired.

I'm incredibly disappointed in just how disconnected the Coast is to the local comedy scene. I hope you are better connected to music, food and politics. The blurb explaining why Yuk Yuks took the Gold for "Best Comedy Night" says, "The Halifax franchise features big names and amateur jokesters to offer the city’s most consistent laughs" As far as amateurs go, the club hasn't had an amateur night for the better part of a year. It makes me wonder if anybody from the Coast been to a Yuk Yuks show this year.

If you can't find somebody on staff to actually COVER the comedy scene, I would certainly volunteer to contribute from time to time for you. You would be guaranteed a few things. 1. An ACCURATE and Comprehensive look at the local scene, both amateur and professional. 2. A lot more work for your editor to clean up horrendous ability to write in a way that is palatable.

Re: “Kaitlin Shuvera wants to challenge you

I love to see the Coast finally taking an interest in something other than Picnicface. They are great, but there is a lot more happening here. Kaitlin is one of my personal favorites. Now all we need to do is get the Coast staff out to see a show more than once or twice a year at one or two specific venues to see that we have a HUGE talent pool of both male and female comics that do a lot more than masturbation jokes. I invite the Coast staff to attend my show at Clay West Bar and Grill that in its 7 months of existence we have had comics who have appeared on Last Call with Carson Daly, the Match Game, Video on Trial, Flashpoint, 22 min, LOCAL comics like Andrew Vaughan, Kaitlin Shuvera, Struhan Sutherland, Ian Black, Edwardo Ramirez, Dan Hendriken, Ryan Fried, Marc Sauve, Chanel Friere, Bryant Thompson, Bill Wood, Zack Trash, Shawn Sampson, and many many many other comics who have a lot more to offer than masturbation jokes. We had the producers from the Halifax Comedy Fest, Just For Laughs Comedy Fest and Hubcap comedy fest bear witness to a full line up of comics who did more than masturbation jokes. I will pay the cab fare or arrange a ride for any Coast Staff that wants to see a show. I don't even care if you cover it, or give it a bad review, I just want the city to know this scene is amazing. It doesn't just happen one week a year.
