Andy Palacio and the Garifuna Collective

Wátina

Andy Palacio and the Garifuna Collective
Wátina
(Cumbancha)
Andy Palacio hails from Belize and specializes in garifuna, a mix of Central American and African sounds traced back to slaves brought to the Central American Caribbean coast. Throughout Wátina the African influence is apparent—most often it’s Malian musical influences, but Mali isn’t the only nation drawn on here. One of the most memorable songs, “Gagándadibá (Take Advice),” sounds like a tune by Geoffrey Oryema (from Uganda). Mellow and haunting, it stands out in a record that celebrates the agility and release experienced by the garifuna singer. That spirit of release occasionally overtakes the song, overwhelms the listener.
