And Sometimes Y | Arts & Culture | Halifax, Nova Scotia | THE COAST

This is a nice surprise. A smart, funny-witty standup delivered (and written) by Kirstin Howell on the roiling turmoil of dating from a single woman's point of view. Interspersing the commentary, well-chosen, well-sung illustrative songs well-accompanied on a Roland electric keyboard by Adam Theriault (who also doubles as a potential Mr Dreamy "gentleman caller" and harmony singer). The song list: the Dixie Chicks' Talking The Long Way, Someday My Prince Will Come, the Dresden Doll's Coin-Operated Boy (truly hilarious), Weezer's Butterfly, The Light In The Piazza by Alan Guettel, Chantal Kreviazuk's All I Can Do, Before He Cheats by Josh Kean and Chris Tompkins and Coldplay's Till Kingdom Come gives you some clue as to the course Howell's "dating" adventures run. Howell, a very expressive, warm and engaging performer delighted the audience with her quick wit ( a swift recovery when a mic cord popped out of her mic seemed to be an intregal part of the act) and impressive vocal abilities with a characterization range that ran the gamut from breathless vulnerability to empowered Broadway belter. What's the dealio behind her obvious stage sophistication? OK. She's a natural talent for one. But there's more. And that'd be Sheridan College Musical Theatre Program training that's honed that deep-well of talent. That's the story. Well worth catching, Kirstin Howell, Adam Theriault in And Sometimes Y.
