Allan Chawner and Andrew Chubb, Bar Beach (Beyond the Sea)

Curator Robin Metcalfe describes Bar Beach (Beyond the Sea) as a "meditation on time, change and memory." A sequence of still photographs by Allan Chawner, the 20-minute, three-channel video installation documents a beach in the artist's hometown of Newcastle, Australia. Taken from the same vantage point, the photographs document the seasons and the effects of changing light on a single place. Integral to the work is original piano music by Australian composer Andrew Chubb. Projected on three angled screens to create a sweeping vista, the best vantage point for this work might just be the view from a beach towel laid out on the gallery floor, especially as winter's chill comes a-creepin'. Don't miss Chubb's performance of his own composition, Meditation at Bar Beach, live on the gallery's in-house grand piano on October 18, as part of Nocturne. Chawner's artist talk will be held October 19. --Meredith Dault
