After I’m Gone

By Laura Lippman (William Morrow)

After I'm Gone is a story of secrets that don't stay buried. Felix Brewer jumped bail before his trial in 1976 and 10 years later his mistress Julie disappears and is assumed to have joined him–until her dead body is found. The book alternates between Sandy, a widower and retired detective working the cold case, and the decades following Felix's disappearance, uncovering what happened to his family and friends. After I'm Gone centres on the suspense of an unsolved crime, and there are many secrets unearthed throughout, but it's the complicated characters that drive the novel. My favourite chapters featured Sandy, because although he wasn't surprising, he felt authentic and easy to root for. However, despite strong writing, the combination of flashbacks and a huge cast of characters mean After I'm Gone isn't as engaging as some of Lippman's other work.

Should council use the yet-to-be-finalized Centre Plan when debating new developments?

  • No, it doesn’t exist yet and is still likely to change
  • Yes, thousands of hours of work and consultation have gone into what’s already assembled
  • Maybe, it really depends on what’s being proposed by the developer
  • I don’t know what the Centre Plan is and do not wish to participate in this poll
