Afrika Bambaataa with Universal Soul

The Amen Ra of universal hip-hop culture, grandfather, godfather, father of the electro funk sound---no matter what you call him, there's no denying that DJ Afrika Bambaataa is a big hip-hop deal, and this Friday he brings his righteous words and beats to the Paragon. Born in the Bronx in 1957, Bambaataa was a leader and member of the Bronx Rivers projects gang, The Savage Seven, before founding hip-hop awareness group the Universal Zulu Nation. Coast writer Mark Black interviewed Bambaataa in November of 2007, when the DJ last performed in Halifax, and asked him how he was able to spread his teachings worldwide. "I knew how to speak, I knew how to talk to people, so it was basically getting out there and speaking to the youth...about changing their ways from the gang life and coming on this style of music we call hip-hop." Feel the vibe by getting your tickets at, or at the door the day of the show. –Holly Gordon
