Adult Entertainment isn't nice, but it's good theatre

The only reason that I can come up with for why there were only a handful of people at Adult Entertainment last night was that Monday is traditionally a dark day in the theatre. However, there’s no excuse for why this show shouldn’t be playing to packed houses for the rest of its run. The play, a gritty story of sex and murder set in a seedy motel room, walks a fine line between comedy and tragedy. The four performers (Leana Todd as Jayne, the tough-yet-tender lawyer, Mike Chandler as Max, the world-weary homicide detective, Darcy Lindzon as Donny, his loose-cannon partner and Sharleen Kalayil as Donny’s hard-pressed wife) play characters that we’ve seen a million times before, but do it with such freshness and naturalness that they truly get under your skin. These are not nice characters. This is not a nice play. But this is really good theatre.
