A shoulder to lean on

To the editor,

I am writing because I was stunned today while cycling on the Bedford Highway. I used to ride this road a couple of years ago when I commuted from Halifax to Lower Sackville, with the traffic and buses flying literally centimetres from my bike. I am quite comfortable with traffic and crazy drivers. But what about other potential cyclists who just want to ride along the water out to Bedford but just don't because of the crazy cars? That question, I hope, is now answered. There's now a paved shoulder on the Bedford Highway! That little four-foot-wide strip of pavement made my day, because it represents something more about this place—that active transportation issues are actually a priority to people in this city.

Thank you to those who helped put that little shoulder on the Bedford Highway. Now I can actually enjoy that part of my ride, and hopefully others who are intimidated to go along this road will now take a ride or run along this beautiful route.
