A Man For All Seasons

TAG does pretty much everything right with its moving production of A Man for All Seasons. Masterful direction by Gisela O’Brien puts the emphasis on playwright Robert Bolt’s thoughtful and thought-provoking script and on the fascinating relationships therein. It’s staged with a simple set so that set changes are carried out in the blink of an eye. Its costumes (to my eye, at least) are period-perfect. Plus, it’s filled with some very fine performances: Roy Ellis as the power-hungry Cromwell, Tony Marshall as Thomas More’s loyal friend the Duke of Norfolk and Ruth Anne Flemming as More’s wordly wife Alice, to name a few. But the heart and soul of this play is Sir Thomas More, and actor Phil Reid is simply perfect in the role. In Reid’s hands, More’s grounded goodness, quick mind and pure heart truly shine. —Kate Watson
