A history of violence

Don’t know your vigilante exploitation from your revenge drama? Jason Eisener suggests a few of his favourites to prepare you for Hobo with a Shotgun.

The Warriors (1979)

It's a huge inspiration on the movie. It's my favourite movie of all time. Hobo is almost in another dimension and that's what The Warriors is. It's not necessarily in the present day, it's got a futuristic feel to it.

Not Quite Hollywood: The Wild, Untold Story of Ozploitation! (2008)

It's a great documentary about Australian filmmaking. It was a huge inspiration on us, the way Australians were making movies in the '70s and '80s. It's bat-shit crazy.

Dead-End Drive-In (1986)

An Australian film. What society has done is created this exploitation movie drive-in. It's where all the bad kids go, but once you're there you can't leave. This kid is trying to escape.

Vice Squad (1982)

Starring Wings Hauser, it's amazing. Hauser plays the most vicious villain I've ever seen. He's a pimp who murdered a prostitute and there's another prostitute who goes under cover. That was a movie I gave to Molly. I wanted her to study the character [of Princess, played by Season Hubley]. She's really strong and powerful and has a lot of confidence. That's what we wanted the Abby character to have.

Street Trash (1987)

For the over-the-top gore. And it's about homeless people. The production design, characters, were definitely an inspiration.

Death Wish 3 (1985)

It's in that crazy, hyper-realistic world with graffiti everywhere, punks running around. And I love how Charles Bronson gets the neighbourhood to build traps and fight.

Class of 1984 (1982)

Slick and Ivan came from that gang of kids. And it's Canadian.
