A Happy Heart: The Maud Lewis Story

When: Tuesdays-Sundays. Continues through Oct. 25 2009
Phone: 424-5280
Price: $20/$24
Stepping into the tiny theatre at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia is like stepping into a painting. Scenic designer Jason Phillips has transformed the walls with colourful scenes straight from the artwork of Maud Lewis, and Woody Woodburn has constructed an ingenious little replica of Lewis’s house. This cheerful world is inhabited by the painter herself, brought to life by Mary Colin Chisolm, who alternates the role in the one-woman show A Happy Heart: The Maud Lewis Story with Carroll Godsman. Lewis invites the audience into her home and tells her life story, from her happy childhood later marred by illness to her relationship with her flawed but loved (and loving?) husband, with wit, grace and charm. This is an effective and affecting piece of theatre. ---Kate Watson Wed-Fri 2pm, Thurs 7pm, Sat-Sun 1pm, 3pm.
