Re: “Relying on a statue in a park to tell our history is lazy

Wouldn't it be cool if we could mark in sidewalks important founding families and First Peoples' original home sites with small squares a la Hollywood Walk of Fame so that the Rund home, for example, had a permanent marker and small explanation for those walking past. I do agree that more reading, research and listening beat the pants off statues but while in the town of Parrsboro this summer I noted with delight a lot of plaques and podium plaques and markers that really help educate as you stroll around the town: who's church this was, which general store was here originally, who sailed from this point... We have more history in NS than most of Canada, being older, and I think those from newer parts west as well as we of NSD love to learn in this easy, casual way about the city that was the gateway to the country.

Re: “Petition to rename Cornwallis Street delivered to city hall

Hal Donner Forbes Street is another I'd like to see, second in priority to Rocky Jones Road. Hal restored and rejuvenated so many derelict and depressed buildings in the North End to return it to a pre-Explosion appearance.

Re: “Sober second thoughts on Halifax smoking ban

Vaping has helped so many smokers to quit cigarettes, I hate to see anyone penalized for it.

Re: “Stuck in the middle of the arts funding food-chain

So glad you are speaking up about this. Our province and our country in general want to, as a good mutual friend of ours says, " the art but not the artist." So, the Catch-22 is that, when you are making art professionally, it takes all your time, so there is no 'day job.' You are making the art then, for free. So you must leave, or you must quit making the art, because there's no going backward. You don't, once you've been professional, become amateur. It would make as much sense as sending a doctor through a CCA program.
I'm here, at 60, after 42 years of well-received, sold out, even awarded work, looking for a 'real ' job. Try that in this economy. It's desperate.
