In Amherst (Massachusetts, but the same arsewipe namesake) they build a salamander crossing over 20 years ago. The little critters use it every year during whatever it is they do that makes them want to cross the road.
Speaking as one who lives in the states, I'm aware of the saber rattling, but no one's gone to defcon 5 or anything. To be frank, many of us miss the days of the cold war. It was easier having just one enemy, after all.
...and as a dual citizen, when I'm up north, I marvel at all the things a government can do when it's not spending 80% of its budget on the military.
There are some excellent wines made in California, Oregon and Washington. For Zins, Ravenswood Zinfandel is one of my favorites. For chards, I like Sonoma Cutrer and Kendell Jackson.
