Great to hear that a fantastic amount of work and effort put in by a fantastic group of people has come to the necessary result... We'll all be better for it. Thanks to those who have put in the hard hours...
Contract interpretation as to who can do what is then combined with decades of history to make the situation seem so complex. It doesn't change the fundamental direction the Stantec report points. By any measure it is a step backwards. Not sideways, not towards a different technology, not with a renewed perspective on the purpose of the service in the first place...simply backwards. If the FEP and WSF are elmininated and everything reverts to truck-n-dump what reasonable person can view that as progressive? If technologies have improved and habits have changed since the '90's (of course they have) then the next steps have to be towards understanding these things collaboratively. Halifax's solid waste management, under standard pressure to reduce costs, has to be able to distinguish "easy" from "sensible". Surely.
So there used to be an after hours bar in that location and now if there's a motion for change to that status quo by rejecting another one moving in then not only is it sneered at as being anti-live music but it's classed as "a curious uprising" that the Marquee/Paragon never contended with. That kind of innuendo does nothing for rational consideration or fair representation. Sometimes The Coast is so predictably superficial and narrow in its conservative view of retaining all that once was it is maddening. Sure, various and plentiful music venues are good for the city but that doesn't mean one business owner's preference should inherently be the right thing. Broaden your view or the city's vibrant arts/music scene will only ever look like a past version of itself.
Thanks to the Canada Games for bringing a sliver of notice to the ever under appreciated sport of squash, and thanks to The Coast for using their "wee dram" of annual sports coverage equally across the CG (though I'm fairly sure hockey, and a few others, are reasonably well understood already). It bears mention though that anyone looking for equipment would do well to skip the obvious chain sports stores (Cleve's, Sport Chek, ...) and find their way to Myk's Court Sports. Myk is a player and now entrepreneur who has more, and better, gear available under his roof than the large stores have put together. He also strings racquets expertly and actually cares about the sport. In short - worth supporting with your squash dollars.
