Re: “Cafe Chianti

I was super disappointed by Cafe Chianti. The reviews online are all really good, so I thought it would be great. I should have known walking in, though, as the ambiance and decor was so, so painfully tacky and dated. Fake trees with lights in them, old Christmas lights in other places, ugly carpet, and a repetitive (but decent) playlist full of any Italian style song you can find (think Dean Martin, Louis Prima, Frank Sinatra). Its really overpriced for the quality of food you're getting. Though it was plated nicely, it seems to be in an effort to distract from the quality of the food ("faux fancy"). My boyfriend and I got separate dishes but had the same low energy vegetable side including two triangularly cut and steamed pieces of carrot, and some asparagus, also steamed. My calamari to start was soggy and bland, which made me really sad. The bread they bring out to start was super dense and chewy (I once read somewhere you can judge a restaurant based on the starter bread they bring out -- could be wrong, but it really wasn't good)(also as someone who loves bread -- all bread -- this was a big loss very early on). This is somewhere that no doubt my grandparents would have taken me and my family for a special occasion dinner. They did not have good taste. Here's the big factor for me: Halifax has a big pool of other extremely good, experimental, food-focused, reasonably priced, and reliably good restaurants, and in that pool, Cafe Chianti falls flat. Its the first restaurant I've ever gone to that I've wanted to leave halfway through the meal. I'm by no means saying restaurants have to be fancy and cutting edge in order to be good, not at all. But I think you should be passionate, know what you're making, and who you're making it for. Cafe Chianti lacked passion, individuality, and flavour. Unfortunately I won't be going back.
