Re: “Halifax mentioned in national list

I gotta say, BRING ON THE BOON. Aside from what I do or don't think about maintaining heritage properties until Halifax slides into the Atlantic, I have not laughed this much at Reality Bites or any other column in The Coast in years.

Congratulations on hiring someone who not only lacks the smug, self-serving and off-puttingly bitter qualities of particular ex-Coast employees, but also seems gifted in criticizing policy and taking the piss at the same time. A breath of fresh air.

Re: “Tammy

So I just want to make sure I'm clear on your basic critical points here:

- the screenplay is a total mess
- unlike "Identity Thief" and "The Heat," McCarthy has to carry the movie on her own
- the tone is inconsistent and frequently inappropriate
- the director clearly hasn't directed a movie before
- there are multiple unnecessary characters
- talented actors are wasted
- the movie is frequently boring
- you recommend the movie

Just so I'm clear.

Re: “Coburg Coffee’s move to unionize

Bulletin: unless one of those employees is carrying $50,000 of debt or something, a collective $100,000 divided by a dozen or so students is an eminently reasonable amount of average debt to have after university.

Re: “ShopTalk visits Dartmouth

You should have included Big Life Café on Portland! Great spot!

Re: “The Grand Budapest Hotel

Don't worry, Tara: twee piffle still gets dismissed as twee piffle whether it's a man or a woman directing.

And those people lining up to see the movie on Quinpool? They're obviously all totally stupid, unworthy of cinema, and not at all motivated by the fact that every other movie playing downtown right now is Captain America: The Winter Soldier (another of Tara's Picks for the month of April).

Re: “Captain America: The Winter Soldier

For coffee #3: hear hear, to Gabriel Ruzin's comments. Where did Jacob Boon go? Ms. Thorne frequently finds herself "reviewing" a movie that she wishes was another movie, and the final product -- rambling and turgid as the prose often is -- generally discusses the movie she wished she'd seen. I would love to review "The Avengers" as if it were "Celine and Julie Go Boating," but that doesn't serve anyone interested in either film.

Re: “Bring Me Your Loves: Why St. Vincent's Halifax Show is So Important

I'm pretty sure Feist's been here as Feist fewer than a dozen times, and I also don't know what "vitality" means in this context (cultural relevance? opposite of sluggishly touring your back-cat to make mortgage payments?).

I am also beyond excited for the St. Vincent show, but I don't know that you need to sit on the board of HPX and have access to the budgets and numbers to appreciate the fact that this is an A-lister playing a B-market. If you are unacquainted, just go out and buy the album and get addicted immediately. :)

Re: “Big Life Whole Foods

Awesome food (the veggie burger, good lord), amazing whole-grain baked goods to take home, great coffee, friendly and casual service -- best spot of its kind in Dartmouth.
