I know that Melissa Buote's review of Bar Kismet was very tongue in cheek but am worried that some people giving it a quick scan might still get the wrong impression of Bar Kismet. It's a wonderful restaurant and bar, one of the very best places I've ever been in Halifax. I'm a regular at Bar Raval in Toronto and that is what originally attracted me to drop in at Bar Kismet on December 10. I was so impressed by every aspect of what they had to offer. Such a creative menu - I had the sweetbreads with charred broccoli and tonnato sauce - it was great for someone a little hesitant to try sweetbreads. Everything worked together. And the roasted carrots with crab - a sort of unlikely pairing which also worked beautifully. The cocktails were just as creative, including a number which used Bar Kismet's own infusions and cordials, including one with needles from a fir tree infused into scotch and another with Nova Scotia sumac and cranberries. I would match them up with any of the great cocktail bars in Toronto. The service was great and the servers very knowledgeable. I had a great conversation with Cooper, the bartender who worked at Hawksworth in Vancouver. I learned a lot from him, especially the thinking of a smart bartender who is trying to find the flavour combination that is a little bit unexpected and really works.
