Learn to Sing Like a Star

Learn to Sing Like a Star
(4AD)
Kristin Hersh is the anti-star in today’s music world. Her reputation was built with bands Throwing Muses, 50FootWave and with her solo material. Learn To Sing is in contrast to the quiet tones on her previous release, The Grotto. There’s a full band sound with nice cello arrangements (such as in the opener “In Shock”) throughout the 14 songs. Her raspy voice still has some punch and there’s nothing hidden with what she has to say (“put a rock into my brain/I feel almost everything” from “Nerve Endings”). What she feels is what you get. “Day Glo” covers the tragedy of New Orleans, while “Vertigo” is about the loss of her own home in Rhode Island.
