Natacha Atlas
Mishmaoul
(Mantra)
Though a variety of flavours has come to be expected from Atlas, she steps up as one of the most prominent singers in Arabic. Mishmaoul is not as food-court multi-cultural as her old band, Trans Global Underground. “Ghanwah Bossanova” finds accord between Middle Eastern phrasing and Brazilian tempo that has been heretofore inconceivable. Princess Julianna is an annoyance on “Feen,” an asset with response vocals on “Batthadah,” which translates as “I Dare You.” Atlas grew up Moroccan in Belgium, so even when she sticks to her roots, there are side sprouts. She succeeds in moving focus to her inventiveness and that elastic voice.
