Stone’s intricate sensuous groove with retro seasoning at every turn can easily slip into the background. In the grit-free confines of slow love jams, she creates some lush girl-group dynamics that might have evolved in the ’70s if disco hadn’t turned up the beat. Steeped in backing vocals usually led by Stone herself, and samples from the Delfonics, Dramatics and Dynasty, the songs feel like soul pastiche wallpaper. Still, “U-Haul” has the bad man zings and “Remy Red” the bar-crawl adventure to make Stone worthy of attention.
