Spoon
Gimme Fiction
(Merge)
It begins with the channelling of T. Rex. This is Spoon’s latest full-length release — the last was Kill the Moonlight — and Gimme Fiction arrives three years later as a pleasant surprise. They did not blow it. Among the din of many bands’ outright theft of 1980s post-punk, goth and new wave, Spoon actually manages to retain an original voice. Gimme Fiction touches on a number of decades: The jangle and theatrics of the 1960s, 1970s-inspired “Emotional Rescue”-esque pseudo disco and the angular 1980s each hold equal billing here. Gimme Fiction will no doubt make a few trips to the beach this summer. It probably is best accompanied by a little shake-it-on-the- dance-floor sweat. Gimme Fiction will make Spoon massive.
