Lady Luck Boutique

Jonesing for jewels? Aching for art? (Angry about alliteration?) The second location of the Lady Luck Boutique opens today at 5519 Young (in the former Abby’s Fabric Shoppe space at the Hydrostone). So does the Hydrostone Gallery, a new art space housed in the boutique’s back room. The gallery and boutique go well together, points out Jennifer Huntley, who co-owns both Lady Luck and the new gallery, with her sister, Melanie. “In the boutique, we carry over 20 local jewellers’ work. So the boutique itself is a form of a gallery as well, showcasing local artists,” she says. Why the second Lady Luck? Most people who show up at the original waterfront location (1869 Upper Water) are tourists, Huntley says. At the Hydrostone, the Huntleys will be able to help Haligonians more easily access the unique handmade pieces they’ve been wowing tourists with for almost two years---from coin purses made from bras, to local jeweller Jennifer Hunter’s nifty recycled-silverware creations, to the Huntleys’ own Feline jewellery line. “Each piece in our shop, as far as the jewellery goes, is one-of-a-kind. It’s handmade right here in the city for the most part,” says Huntley. The shops also carry some mass-produced accessories. Hats not your thing? Try the gallery which will showcase “emerging local artists” working in a variety of mediums, including photography, painting, sculpture and ceramics. The gallery’s grand opening’s tonight from 7-9pm. They’ll kick things off with a group show, “Beginnings,” which features the work of more than 20 local artists and runs until May 11. Show the Huntleys your support and wow ’em with your jewellery-making skills---they’re always looking for new artisans to showcase. Or, you could always serenade them with your version of “Luck Be a Lady.” Because I’m sure they’ve never heard that one before. Call the new shop at 444-3050.
