Floodland is rolling into the Halifax Urban Folk Festival (HUFF) with its new album in tow.
The four-piece band is predominately known for its live shows around the city. On Friday, Floodland is joined by Beauts and No It's Fine to celebrate the release of Static Walls, which was recorded over 10 days in Toronto last year. Guitarist and lead vocalist Aaron Green says it was helpful for the group to go to another place with the sole aim of making music.
"It was kind of nice to just like, step out of life and everything else kind of got put on hold," says Green. The band collaborated with Gavin Gardiner of The Wooden Sky to produce the album. Their routine was "get up, eat breakfast, go play until we stop getting good takes, go home, go to bed" and repeat.
"It was a really cool way to work, 'cause everyone was just so in the bubble of that recording. It really helped everyone zone in on what we were there for," says Green. "It was awesome to leave the studio at the end of the day and be like, 'There's four songs 90 percent done.'"
Since its 2015 album It's the Fire, Floodland has had a shift in its lineup, welcoming Tori Cameron on board as bassist. Cameron "widened the possibilities of what we could do," says Green. "Her voice just gave us that whole other aspect of a palette to use, because she can sing any kind of harmony however high or low. And her bass style really helps there too. She has a really individual sound."
Floodland's HUFF show at The Seahorse Tavern—one of the band's regular stomping grounds—will be the chance to hear Static Walls played in its entirety.
"It's great to be part of HUFF. There's so many awesome acts playing all that week," says Green. "People who might not know about us can see us alongside all those other names too."
