If there was ever a Year of the Donair, this would be it. Named Halifax’s official food by city council in late 2015, the drippy tinfoil-wrapped delight has been elevated to more than a quick and addictive late-night snack, finding itself on fine dining menus and stuffed in egg rolls and steam buns across town. “It’s not just food anymore, it’s now an experience,” says King of Donair’s Norman Nahas, whose classic donair is elevated to the Best of Halifax Hall of Fame this year after 16 straight wins. “It’s part of people’s pride for being for Halifax.” KOD’s been crowning more first-time donair diners than ever, and was even a field study for a university class. “We’re seeing more people in their 60s and 70s coming in to share a donair. The tourist business has just been crazy and students are always coming in for their first donair. It’s just one thing after another.”
