Good Company’s Good Cause has binders full of rappers

A rap show for a good cause finds the local hip-hop community working for students

While the government of Nova Scotia invests in commercial development and urban roundabouts, over 20,000 people still annually rely on Feed Nova Scotia for food and household items.

Of that number, 32 percent are children, often from single parent families that traditionally struggle with the costs of the back-to-school season. To help alleviate this financial burden, the local rap community has come together for Good Company: Good Cause this Thursday at The Company House.

Organized by Nathan Simon (AKA NaDaSiMusik of Winner's Circle), 10 bucks or some school supplies will get you entry into this 10-person rap show with all proceeds going to Feed Nova Scotia.

"This is a tough time of year for families and children who don't have the means for school supplies," says Simon, as school boards have increased the demand for families to provide necessary educational materials. "No one should have to worry about having these types of things in 2014."

Feed Nova Scotia accepts products that students must bring to school each year, including scribblers, binders, knapsacks, writing tools, art supplies, athletic shoes and clothing. Monetary donations support Feed Nova Scotia's Back to School campaign, which provides lunches for students in need. If you're not sure what to donate, office supply stores often carry recommended lists of requested supplies.

After Simon put out the call to artists, the response was met with understanding and support. "We have the ability as a unit to help people," Simon says, who has invited rappers Alfie, Rellz, EPDMC, Ghettochild, Certified and more to perform at the event. "I can't immediately change things but I can take some steps forward. We're relying on people to find it in their hearts donate and show love." —Adria Young
