The Thousand-Dollar Tan Line

by Rob Thomas and Jennifer Graham (Vintage)

For fans of the Veronica Mars franchise, there's a new mystery series picking up where the recent film leaves off. Ten years after graduating from Neptune, Veronica is working at Mars Investigations and is called in when a college girl goes missing during spring break; only to find out she has a connection to the case. The writing is clear and clever, fitting in perfectly with Veronica's voice, but it feels a little too much like a continuation of the TV show. Some characters, like Mac and Weevil, act in ways that no longer feel authentic with all the time that has passed. As fun as the story is, The Thousand-Dollar Tan Line feels a little too much like getting exactly what you want, and there's something vaguely dissatisfying about that–I hope future books explore a little deeper.
