On The Floor: A Novel

by Aifric Campbell (Picador)

Nominated for the Orange Prize, On The Floor by Aifric Campbell is the story of 28-year-old Geri Golloy, an investment banker in London. She's made her name by doing business with a star client in Hong Kong who is now insisting that she move there, even though she doesn't want to. The novel takes place in 1991, unravelling in the time leading up to the Gulf War, and the stress Geri feels consumes the reader. Campbell herself worked on the trading floor of Morgan Stanley, and the intensity and detail of the novel reflect her experiences, especially as a woman in a male-dominated field. On The Floor takes what could be the dry world of finance and turns it into an easy-to-follow, adrenaline-filled race, taking the story in an unexpected direction that I wish had been a little more premeditated, however, as a whole I appreciated the powerfully written novel.
