The very compelling Lake Bell—you may remember her as the singular female character with substance on HBO’s How to Make It in America, AKA Jeantourage—has written and directed herself a modest, funny starring vehicle with In A World.... Set in the world of LA voice actors (get it?), Bell stars as Carol, daughter of industry king Sam Sotto (Fred Melamed, whose hairy shoulders get way too much screen time) who is trying to break in. But they don’t like women in the booth. It’s no accident that Carol’s potential big break is voicing a Hunger Games ripoff produced by a woman played by feminist icon Geena Davis---Bell knows exactly what she’s saying and doing here, from music (Tears For Fears) to casting (Demitri Martin, Michaela Watkins, Rob Corddry) to the best angles of her own captivating face. A low-stakes, languid, lovely debut.
