There are so many breathtaking moments in Ballet Jörgen’s gorgeous production of Swan Lake that it’s hard to pick a favourite. For sheer beauty, I‘d have to choose the first time the swans are seen en masse (en flock?) filling imaginations with the flutter of white wings. For delightful comedy melded with immense physical prowess, the jester’s dance (performed by Gustavo Hernandez) takes the prize. And for crystalline emotion portrayed through movement, the tragic last dance performed by Siegfried (Daniel Da Silva) and Odette (Saniya Abilmajineva) wins hands down. The sets are simple but evocative, the costumes are lavish French-inspired confections and the ballet itself is a timeless love story that captures the imagination from the first appearance of the villain Von Rothbart (Hiroto Saito) cloaked in inky black to Odette’s final transformation.
Ballet Jörgen has spent 25 years making ballet accessible to people all over Canada. With productions as outstanding as Swan Lake, it's obvious we are very fortunate indeed.
