It seems incredible that a play as dark and disturbing as The Glace Bay Miners' Museum left me feeling warm all over, but it did. Part of the glow came from seeing a beautiful production that included a wonderfully versatile and evocative set, music that was integrated in and integral to the play, and masterful writing that beautifully encapsulates a time and place. The rest of the warm fuzzy feeling came from watching five incredible actors bring to life five truly memorable characters in a way that lifted up the power of relationships that endure through poverty, death and time. Francine Deschepper is luminous as Margaret MacNeil, the young Cape Breton woman whose life is both a romance and a tragedy. She draws you into a tale that touches on the epic and the ordinary, and leaves you with a smile on your face at the end.
