About as deep as the popular young adult pages that spawned it, the dorky humour of Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days isn't entirely unpalatable. When his dad outlaws video games for the summer, socially awkward Greg decides to spend his days sneaking into the nearby country club for swimming, smoothies and potential smooches with classmate crush Holly. Zachary Gordon, as the titular wimpy kid, leads a bevy of child actors who perform to various degrees of success. While the always welcome Steve Zahn squeezes as much dramatic weight as is possible playing the role of Greg's schlubby, disconnected father. The Wimpy Kid films (three in total now) rely more on episodic catastrophes than standard story arcs, but luckily that shaggy doggedness works well when set in the endless wasteland of a school kid's summer vacation.
