It's Ghostbusters meets The Burbs in the unfortunately flat alien invasion comedy The Watch. When a Costco security guard is gruesomely killed, manager Ben Stiller organizes a neighbourhood watch comprised of police force reject Jonah Hill, newcomer Richard Ayoade (The IT Crowd), and Vince Vaughn. Despite their bumbling ineffectualness, the foursome somehow uncover an alien conspiracy and are forced to save the world through slime and dick jokes. A screenplay co-written by Seth Rogen seems more impressed with its own vulgarities than story or originality. Likewise, Stiller and Vaughn are well entrenched in their stale, go-to roles of beleaguered straight man and Vince Vaughn, respectively. Pity too Ayoade, who deserves a better introduction to North American audiences than this. Ultimately, The Watch is disappointing for what its comedy pedigree could have made, instead of the middlebrow, low-swinging film that they settled on.
